In order to write an effective analysis, you must:
Begin with a thesis. It can be basic (e.g., This chapter provides important insights on the drawbacks
of universal suffrage). The point is to give yourself (and your reader) a clear sense of where the
analysis is headed.
Critically engage with the day’s material. What are its insights/implications/applications/
shortcomings/limitations, etc.?
Make connections between the day’s material and global democratic decay
Make connections between the day’s material and other concepts/theories/ideas/events you’ve
studied in the major
Reflect on how specific aspects of the reading might be relevant for your research topic

Tip: You don’t need to do all of this in every paper, but not doing any of this probably means you won’t bethrilled with your grade.
Here are some things to avoid:
Too much summary. Summary and analysis are not the same thing. Focus on the latter.
Long direct quotations. Don’t let quotations be a stand in for you own voice. If necessary, refer to
the page number (e.g., “The authors’ reference to Aristotle’s argument for democracy on p. x…”)
Typos, grammatical errors, awkward language. All of these make it harder to understand your argument and therefore reduce the effectiveness of the essay.
