Critically evaluate a specific approach to either the philosophy or the sociology of science. Example: positivism, falsificationism, Merton’s theory of norms, the strong programme in the sociology of scientific knowledge, Bourdieu, Marxist approaches.

This course is called “Science, Technology, and Society” where the concept of sociology is mixed with technology. I chose the mentioned topic (no. 1) but you can choose any topic from below if you want.

You must pick one from the following essay questions:

1. Critically evaluate a specific approach to either the philosophy or the sociology of science. Example approaches could include: positivism, falsificationism, Merton’s theory of norms, the strong programme in the sociology of scientific knowledge, actor-network theory, Bourdieu, Marxist approaches.
2. What is “the deficit model” in the public understanding of science? Critically evaluate this model with reference to an example of your choice.
3. To what extent are those that fear a resurgence of “eugenics” justified in their concerns?
4. What is pharmaceuticalisation? Provide examples.
5. To what extent is the internet either empowering and/or entrapping citizens?
6. Religion poses a threat to science. Discuss.
7. What criticisms have been made of the forensic sciences? Are these criticisms justified?
