critique of Franklin Roosevelt

Overview: Now that you have given an overview of your historic figure Franklin Roosevelt, I want you to evaluate them as a person. No one is perfect and that is true for historical figures as well as contemporary ones, and so I want you to describe three ways your person could have done a better job, been a better person, or generally did not live up to their potential. I would also like you to use two secondary sources (lectures, readings, or the book you chose) but also two primary sources to make your Critique. I recommend primary sources created by your figure or by their detractors, but it is up to you.

Structure: Your paper should be between 2-3 pages double-spaced and should follow a five-paragraph essay format and the first thing you need to do is to come up with a general criticism of the figure that explains why the failed in the three ways you are going to describe. There are two major categories that might be useful to you: societal failings (blind spots that were common among people of the time) and personal failings (personal prejudice or character flaws). Once you have selected a flaw, choose three examples of when that demonstrate that flaw and these will be your three body paragraphs. In your last paragraph you should summarize the examples you just gave and end with a thought of how history might be different if your figure had acted differently.

Citations: For this assignment I want you to use at least one primary source and two secondary sources. Whenever you use your sources, you should cite it using Chicago Manual of Style in either a footnote or an endnote. Check the Finding Sources and Citing Sources pages in Lesson 2.3 if you would like a reminder on where to look for sources and how to cite them. Make sure to use the correct format for your footnotes well as it is a part of your grade.
