Using Neo-Aristotelian Criticism, write a 4 – 5 page paper, using College Standard formatting (12 point font, Times New Roman typeface, 1 inch margins, APA title page, etc)
Your paper should follow the structure of Neo-Aristotelian criticism:
Reconstruct the text – who is the speaker, what is their background? What is the occasion? Who is the audience? This may require some research.
Analyze the artifact – develop upon the five canons of rhetoric. You ought to
Clearly label each canon
Define or explain the five canons when they are referenced.
Offer specific quotes from the speech to illustrate each canon
Define and cite terms as used in the textbook. For example: defining the organizational pattern when discussing arrangement, citing stylistic devices such as personificaiton when discussing style, defining and explaining elements of delivery when discussing delivery.
Assess the impact – were the speaker’s goals met? What were those goals? Why were they (not) met? What went well or poorly? What happened as a result of the speech? How did their message lead to that result, specifically, based on your analysis? Depending on the speech you choose, some of this may have to be your opinion, whereas there is a very clear and discoverable result for other speeches.
Your analysis should be bookended with an introduction and a conclusion.
Your critique will be graded on how well you analyze your chosen presentation using the Neo-Aristotelian critique method. There is a rubric attached to the dropbox for your review. Please do so before you begin work on the paper.
Please do the following before submitting your paper:
Proofread. Check your grammar, sentence structure, spelling, etc. Have a friend read the paper. Use spell check. Papers that are unreadable or difficult to understand will lose points.
