Cultural Self-Analysis – Part 1 Draft

Your Cultural Self-Analysis project will span multiple modules. There are two key parts to this assignment: 1) Value Orientation Responses and 2) a Reflection. The ensure you provide the most detail within your project, we will be submitting draft versions of these two parts before completing the finalized project.

Directions:

Step 1: Review the value orientations you learned about earlier in the term. These value orientations can be found within the Chapter 2: Starting with Culture Canvas page, and Chapter 2 of the course OER.

Step 2: Answer each of the following prompts by effectively applying the concepts to yourself, making sure to address all sections within each. The response to each of the following sections should be a minimum of 1-2 paragraphs each (a paragraph is 5-7 complete sentences); however, the more detail you provide, the better! Feel free to review the Sample – Cultural Self-Analysis – Part 1 for more insight.
Family History
Where are your ancestors from, originally? When did they come to the United States? What were their reasons for coming here?
To answer these questions this may require you asking various family
members. However, if you do not have access to this information, just include what you know about where relatives have lived in the US or other countries
What cultural and/or family traditions, beliefs, values or behaviors have been passed down in your family?
Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck’s World Views – Describe and explain your beliefs in each area:
Human Nature (good, bad, mixed; changeable or fixed)
Relationship to Nature (mastery, harmony, subjugation)
Relationship to Time (future, present, past)
Preferred form of Activity (doing, becoming, being)
Hall’s High vs. Low Context Communication
Describe where you tend to be on this continuum. If your communication style changes in different settings, explain how/why it varies.
Hofstede’s Cultural Values – Describe and explain where you are in each continuum:
Individualism vs. Collectivism
Uncertainty Avoidance (high vs. low)
Power Distance (high vs. low)
Masculinity vs. Femininity (follow Hofstede’s definition!)
Long-term vs. Short-term Orientation
