My name is De’Patrick Mitchell and I am an Army veteran . I served in the military for nine years , upon my time in service to this country ; I encountered many people from distinctively different cultural backgrounds and various ethnicities . I have been married to my wife for thirteen years and we have three beautiful children . I currently work in the oil and gas industry and my wife is a school teacher who works with children with special needs .
My current position gives me the opportunity to travel and work with individuals from many different cultural backgrounds , and helping one another to achieve a common goal of getting the job as safely and efficiently as possible . Intercultural communication directly impacts how safely we work daily . We have some interpreters to help with the language barriers , but over time we have started to communicate more effectively and even though we are different culturally it’s our humanity that bonds us .
I am of African-American and Creole/French descent . I was brought up by my mother and father whom are both African-American , but my grandparents are both Creole . My family is culturally diverse and there are a couple different languages spoken by other family members when I am around . My grandparents are no longer living ,and I want to gain more insight and understanding of my cultural background ;which may help me better understand other cultures as well as discover things we may have in common .
