For this Assignment you need to 1. state the question you are going to answer for the final essay (you can change this at a later date as we move through the course) 2. indicate the themes you will need to cover, for example, if you were going to focus on left realism the themes you might want to cover could be as follows: the names of key authors; key components of the theory; influence; a consideration of the criticisms of this approach (you do not have to go into detail for this stage just indicate those areas you think will be important). 3. a list of key source materials – i.e. what literature are you going to use to answer the question. As noted in the ‘Final Essay’ section I am fully aware that not all of the course sections are open so it is difficult to decide on a topic – this is largely a ‘brain-storming’ exercise, to get you thinking and gathering material outside of that provided on blackboard.

Why did Beccaria oppose the death penalty? Do you think it should be seen as a relic of a by-gone society and thus be abolished or should it be retained? Remember to justify your answer by using the literature
My main focus is to look into the death penalty system and see why many oppose the plan, using numerous scholarly articles to prove my agreement with Beccaria. I am against the death penalty, and I feel like it is unjust because many people who go on trial do not have proper representation; therefore, they are misrepresented. Another focus is statistics on the number of death penalties in the United States and comparing the social class. This is the idea I have for now didn’t brainstorm in depth.
