(1) Preventing Death: Visit the website for the National Centers for Disease Control at http://www.cdc.gov/ and gather information about the following: a) impact of race or ethnicity on breast and prostate cancer rates nationally, and b) impact of race or ethnicity and geographic location on breast and prostate cancer rates within your state in comparison to other states, and based on your location as compared to other locations in the state. When examining this data, respond to the following question.
What conclusions might be drawn from this data about the role that race and gender discrimination and geographic location might play in relation to prevention, diagnosis and treatment efforts relating to these types of cancer?
(2) Caring for the Dying: Consider the following: Have any of you, your parents, your other relatives, or friends had the experience of having someone who had a life-threatening illness that became terminal and who needed to then also be cared for by outside professionals (such as a hospice or a palliative care program)? Respond to the following questions:
How did the person who was dying deal with this shift? How did family members handle having to involve outside caregivers? How did the outside professionals who were involved deal with this situation? How might this situation relate to the points made in the text?
(3) Social Consolidation of Death: Consider the following and respond to the questions that follow: Recall/identify an event in your own community (school, neighborhood, or broader community) that involved the sudden, unexpected death(s) of individuals and that brought community members together as a larger group or groups of individuals together. Respond to the following questions:
What were the specific circumstances? How did the rituals or activities undertaken serve as a way of creating a sense of unity, cohesiveness, and social consolidation?
