Imagine that you were asked to moderate a panel discussion between two psychologists, one who follows the Freudian perspective, and one who adheres to the behaviorist perspective on the existence of the unconscious.
Begin by asking both psychologists to explain their stance on whether the unconscious exists. This will require you to determine three points, supported by scholarly literature, that each could use to counter the other’s perspective.
As their discussion evolves, you may bring in additional questions to “help” moderate the conversation. For example, you may want to follow up on the role of subliminal cues, or ask them both to explain whether it is possible to learn without being aware of what one is learning, or what evidence they can provide to explain whether behavior occurs without thought, or even how to explain dreams such as through the Activation-Synthesis Hypothesis (Hobson & McCarley, 1977).
You may present this assignment in a question and answer format, and use first person as appropriate. However, be sure to support the information presented using the references you located in Week 2, as well as other scholarly resources.
