Instructions:
You will be presented a scenario that prompts the question, “What are the ethical issues surrounding a nursing situation?” You will explore and discuss developmental considerations and patient-centered care strategies.
Scenario: While in your care, a 16-year-old female indicates she is pregnant but does not want anyone to know. She tells you she wants an abortion, but she also seems very conflicted. She says you are the first and only person she has talked with about any of this. You have strong feelings about this subject.
What are the laws in your state about abortion and the care of minors?
Do your personal feelings and opinions about abortion play a part in the nursing care you provide to her? Explain.
What are the potential ethical issues in this situation?
Identify all persons who are legally and/or ethically involved.
What strategies would you use in response? Include concepts of confidentiality, privacy, trust, the consent process, and autonomy with a focus on developmental considerations.
Apply an ethical theory or framework to justify your position.
Respond to others’ positions by constructively arguing while discussing the ethical issues outlined in the positions.
