Concept papers are designed to explore key concepts and ideas from the exercises and apply them to practical situations. These practical situations will be drawn from NTSB accident or incident investigations. They are intended to help the student gain greater insight into the procedures, rules, and techniques that are contained in this course and how they can be used to conduct a safe and efficient flight. Concept papers should be formatted as follows. Failure to follow the prescribed format will result in points deducted from the score.
The concept papers are to be typed, double-spaced, a minimum of 750 words in the body of the text (does not include title page, abstract, appendix, references, etc.). The content of the paper is expected to be concise and to the point, without extraneous “filler” material. The content is to be logically organized and the points mentioned should support the conclusions. Any references used, including the course text, must be included in the references section. References cited must conform to either APA or MLA formats.

Concept Paper 1:
Take two of your findings from Exercise 1, and compare them to what the Pilot Guide to Takeoff Safety (PGTS) says. Do your findings (be specific about what they are) support or contradict the recommendations or explanations in the PGTS? (Cite the page number of the PGTS where you found your reference.)
V1 can be defined as two concepts, what are they? Discuss the penalties of a late decision to reject the takeoff.
Define and explain the term Balanced Field Length (BFL) and how environmental conditions may affect the calculation of this term.
Define the effects of density altitude on takeoff performance.
