Definitions of Aging due
Old age is described in your text using chronological age, social roles, functional age and subjective age.
Explain each of those terms and describe how someone you know, over the age of 60 might fit those descriptions.
Please give two examples to demonstrate these terms. The terms apply to everyone, in one way or another.
As an example, my mother-in-law who died last year, was 98 (chronological age), was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother (social roles), was able to take care of herself and her home until a few months before she died, and was able to continue with many of the same activities she was used to doing (functional age – younger than 98), and if you didn’t know she was 98, you never would have guessed it because she was generally healthy and active, and very involved in life (subjective age – younger than 98).
On the other hand, a hospice patient I worked with was 56 (chronological age), was a former teacher, an aunt, a sister, a terminally ill woman (social roles), was unable to take care of herself and needed total care (functional age – older than 56), and was very ill and not very involved in life (subjective age – older than 56).
And myself: I am 69 (chronological age); a mother, grandmother wife (actually a newlywed- I got married in September of 2019), teacher, artist, sister (social roles); am able to fulfill all the activities of daily living without help, and continue with the activities I’ve been doing, like continuing to teach (functional age – younger than 69); I am healthy, active, involved in the community, and people tell me I don’t “look” 69 (subjective age – younger than 69).
