What is Nature?
Rhetorical Mode: Description. Case: first and third person
Please read all the directions for this essay before you begin writing.
Writing problem: Describe a place you consider natural in such a way that readers will understand how you define nature.
Directions:
· Go to a place that you consider to be a natural place. Spend at least ninety minutes taking notes and reflecting on what makes this particular place natural.
Look for and make note of any living critters in your place AND consider writing about one of them for Essay #2 (look ahead)
Turn your notes into a three to four page essay that shows your definition of nature.
Other considerations: Any definition of nature should show the relationship humans have with nature. Our definitions of nature usually are unconsciously chosen, that is we inherit them through cultural learnings, parents, media, literature; as such they are often unquestioned and unwarranted assumptions we carry. This essay should question those assumptions instead of considering them as facts. Finally, this essay should engage a reader who is not part of the class with material you are learning from the class. You may not use a dictionary definition in your paper!
Rules of the game: The essay must rely on description to define nature. The essay must have or clearly imply a thesis statement (a one-sentence definition of nature). Nowhere in the paper can you use a dictionary definition.
