Core Competency Essay #1: Values, Philosophy, and History
Objectives
These core competencies are the foundation of a student’s intellectual and professional development in the context of a vocation as a higher education professional. Adopting a set of values, guiding beliefs, ethics, and principles of demonstrated proficiency that are consistently practiced in the field is an essential characteristic of a successful higher education professional.
Outcomes
The competencies explored in these assignments will be the lenses through which students will be expected to analyze, reflect on, complete all assignments, and interrogate case studies within the Field Experience course during the fall semester. Students are encouraged to explore how one’s currently conceived professional identity resonates with and is expanded by the core competencies that are given priority by the MA Higher Education program (student affairs concentration).
Essay Prompt:
1) Describe the competency,
2) explain why the competency is relevant to your professional practice in the field of higher education,
3) describe a plan for ongoing professional development and personal assessment in the context of this competency.
Questions to consider when making meaning out this competency:
How do I prioritize the values that inform the work that I do (i.e. social justice, safety, honoring the past, confidentiality, fiscal responsibility, collaboration, student development, etc.)?
How do I define my moral/ethical behavior within the field? How are morals/ethics enacted? From where do these moral/ethical standards originate?
What is it that I do in higher education (i.e. Who do I work with? Whom do I serve?)
How will I engage my professional development/lifelong learning within the field?
How do I measure personal success/growth?
