Describe abnormal behavior in terms of the 4 Ds (distress, dangerousness, deviance, and dysfunction).

Respond to ONE of the following prompts:
(1) Prior to this module, how would you have defined abnormal behavior? Describe abnormal behavior in terms of the 4 Ds (distress, dangerousness, deviance, and dysfunction). Then, select one of the 4 Ds and develop an original example of a person whose behavior would be classified as such.
(2) It is safe to assume that mental illness has existed as long as humans have. Humans haven’t always understood mental illness as we do today. Select a historical time period (prehistoric, Greco-Roman, Middle Ages, Renaissance, 18th-19th centuries) and describe the explanations put forth and treatments developed for abnormal behavior. In your opinion, why did these people develop these explanations?
(3) Listen to the podcast “The Tragedy of Mental Illness Stigma” provided in the module and provide a summary of what is discussed making sure to connect the information provided to the discussion of stigma in your textbook. What stood out to you the most as you listed to the podcast? What, if anything, do you think could be done to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness?
(4) What are stereotypes? Reflect on the degree to which you hold stereotypes about persons who suffer from mental illness. What specific stereotypes do you hold? Why do you think you’ve formed these stereotypes? Or, what stereotypes do you know those around you hold about persons with mental illness? Hypothesize why they have these views and what could be done to change them.
(5) Various research methods are used to study topics relevant to abnormal psychology. Select one such method and describe what it entails and the purpose that it serves. Then, develop an original example involving a disorder and describe how it might be studied using the research method you described.
