Write an essay in which you describe and analyze a significant experience so that you can help others learn from whatever you went through. In addition, you will have to do some research to determine whether your experience is supported by what research shows. In other words, do others go through the same processes as you have gone through to work through the experience. You’re free to choose any type of experience: personal, political, aesthetic, cross-cultural, or literary. For example, if listening to an album or reading a particular novel was influential on the way you view yourself or the world around you, then you should describe briefly the intellectual, psychological, or aesthetic power of the book or album and then argue why it was significant for you.
Outline:
1) Introduction and position: In the first section, try to get the reader’s attention by describing what happened. Use concrete language to allow the reader to enter the space within which something happened. Don’t just say that X or Y happened. Show what happened and use descriptive language so that the reader can visualize the experience too.
2) What did you learn from the experience? In this section, you should argue why you think this experience was significant for you and why should others care. What did you learn about people or about the world or about aspects of human psychology? In this section, you will try to persuade the reader of the significance of the experience so use some of the strategies we’ve reviewed over the past few weeks.
3) For the third part of the paper, I would like you to do some research about the particular experience to determine whether research supports what you experienced. For example, let’s say, you had an accident that was so traumatic that you stopped driving for a while. Your goal should be to determine whether the majority of people had the same response to the experience as you did. If your response was different, then help the reader understand why. Make sure to cite the sources used.
4) What advice would you give someone who has had a similar experience? In this section, you should help the reader understand why what you learned from the experience can be helpful to others also. Don’t just say that we can learn from X, but rather argue your position.
What I’ve provided above are the different parts of the essay; you’re free to write as many paragraphs as you’d like. Just make sure your paper is well-edited and has the three parts outlined above.
