1. Select three different concepts covered in seminar readings/sources. 2. Define and explain what these concepts mean, based on the readings/sources you selected. (be precise and accurate in your description) 3. Describe circumstances where you have encountered these concepts in your personal experience or that of others. 4. Write your reflections in a manner that is clear and easy to understand and follow. The objective of this exercise is for you to connect what we are examining and doing in seminar and lecture to the “real world”, to our daily lives, to the routine way the algorithmic techniques and business model of surveillance platform capitalism affect us and others around us. The point is to get you to notice these things and to reflect on them through an academic lens—using, concepts and ideas in and from academic readings we covered in seminar and/or lecture. You are not required in anyway or form to disclose anything intimate or anything you feel uncomfortable discussing. You have every right to keep what you consider private, well, private. You set your own boundaries. Do not discuss or go into anything you do not want to. All you have to do is to find moments or situations in your life where you have encountered or engaged with concepts and issues covered in seminar/lecture readings and sources. You can talk about how, for example, you were on social media and noticed many practises of self-curation and image management and link it to academic readings/sources we covered in seminar. You don’t even have to talk about what has happened to you or what you have experienced directly. You can select a newspaper article/story you read recently and talk about how it’s connected to themes and concepts covered in academic readings covered in seminar. CONCEPTS: Relate them to personal experiences 1. Self Curation/image management – link to social media use, self-curation/image management, and adolescent mental health. Social media and noticed many practises of self-curation and image management and link it to academic readings/sources we covered in seminar. You can talk about how recommendations on video sharing platforms suggest certain things. 2. COMMERCIAL PRACTICES AND ALGORITHMIC TECHNIQUES – platforms can use choice architecture to influence the decisions and behaviour of their users. Johnson and others list and describe some of them. Could you list them and explain how they can be used to shape and influence user decision-making? Refer to choice architecture throughout. 3. Data protection – 2. To what extent do the algorithmic techniques used by platforms, such as choice architecture and nudges, influence the decisions of users to “consent” to their personal and behavioral data being collected online?
