Based on the textbook and the excerpt from Peter Kolchin’s American Slavery , describe how and why the institution of slavery began and developed in colonial British North America. Consider the reasons the colonists gave for keeping slaves and why some colonists opposed slaveholding. What challenges in the labor market encouraged the growth of slavery?

Essays should be 500-800 words in Times New Roman 12 pt. font, double-spaced, and in the Chicago Style (C.M.S.). Submit your essay as a Word document through the Dropbox by the deadline.
