Description: This assignment is an opportunity to reflect on your knowledge and learning, with a focus on your own schooling experiences, in elementary, middle, and/or high school.
In 2-3 pages, describe your prior knowledge of the LGBTQ+ community and/or LGBTQ+ youth.
First, describe your own prior knowledge of and exposure to the LGBTQ+ community and/or LGBTQ+ youth:
whether you have been a part of this community or whether you have not.
how do you rate your prior knowledge—Extensive? Limited? Much more to learn?
what topics/areas do you know least about?
what are the sources of your knowledge?
what prior experiences inform the knowledge you have?
Next, focus specifically on your K-12 schooling experience in relation to LGBTQ+ topics and people. Specifically, consider:
if, how, and when you were exposed to the type of topics we’re exploring in this class.
not only specific teaching, reading, and assignments, but also school policies and practices, and presence of LGBTQ+ school community members (teachers, students, staff, families)
what did you learn at school about LGBTQ+ people, history, or events – if anything?
Provide specific details about the inclusions or the omissions.
Then, consider how what you were exposed to or were not exposed to in school, your family, and/or your community has shaped your own knowledge, feelings, attitudes, and beliefs about yourself and others.
Describe how the policies and practices of school shaped your experiences and understanding regarding gender identity and sexual orientation issues.
Lastly, conclude the paper with one or two statements that indicate what you hope to gain from your participation in this course
