This week’s assignment is based on chapters 6 and 7.

The assignment
In chapter 6 of the Laudon text we learn that business intelligence relies heavily on advanced database technologies. Some of these technologies include database management systems, data warehouses, data marts, data mining, and analytics. Also, the concept of Big Data is paving a new path in the arena of business intelligence. The case study on page 246, How reliable is big data?, provides examples of organizations that are collecting and analyzing Big Data.
Networking is the focus of chapter 7. Advanced networks make the internet possible and provide an underpinning for a revolution in communications. High speed networks offer greater capacity that can be used for bandwidth intensive applications. One such application is Unified Communications.
Unified Communications allows companies to merge disparate modes of communication into a single service. It facilitates increased collaboration and promises to achieve productivity gains and drive down cost. The software integrates telephony, email, instant messaging, faxing, voicemail, video and audio conferencing into one seamless interface over the same data network.
