Part I – Your assignment begins with watching the 30 minute video. You will hand write ( do not type) a running record of the 30 minutes of detailed play activity you see during the video observation. Your running record should not be done as bullet points. Please make sure that you know what a running record looks like. (Sentences and objective details). Please take a photo of the pages of your running record and submit with Part II assignment. ( 5 points) Do not worry if your writing looks sloppy or is written in a language other than English. DO NOT REWRITE YOUR OBSERVATION NOTES. I want the ones you wrote as you watched the video.
Part II – After you have completed the observation and running record, the second part of this assignment is to answer the following questions based on the information gathered during Part I. Please refer to your book and lecture notes if you need to for clarification on questions. ( 55 pts)

Part II Questions :
1) General Characteristics:
Describe the toddlers appearance ( skin color, hair, nails, facial features, unique characteristics).
Include the child’s age at the time of the video, her height and weight at birth and currently. Does the child appear healthy? What makes you think so?
2) Physical Development
Describe the child’s physical development. What is the coordination and control this child exhibits?
What gross motor skills did you observe? ( List three and be specific)
What fine motor skills did you observe? ( List three and be specific)
Did you notice the type(s) of grasp the child used? Describe in detail.
Did the child appear to be comfortable with their physical abilities? Explain.
Make sure you use descriptive words such as: cephalucaudal, proximodistal, gross and fine motor
3) Emotional Development
Did you observe any of the following emotions? Give a brief description of at least three of these expressions and describe what caused the emotion. Ex: ( joy, disgust, sadness, anger, jealously, curiosity, fear, shyness, anxiety, frustration, excitement, interest, surprise).
4) Psycho-social Development ( 10)
How does the child appear to relate to her mother? Give one example of attachment.
How does the child respond to familiar voices and pets? Give one example.
Did you notice the child using social referencing? If you did, explain. If you did not, explain what you would have expected to see.
What behaviors of the child can lead you to draw any conclusions about the stage of psycho-social development? What stage of psycho-social development would you expect this child to be in?
5) Cognitive Development/Language
How did the child communicate her needs/wants? Give two examples. How did the adult respond?
What expressive language and receptive language did you notice? Give two examples of each.
According to Piaget, there are four stages of cognitive development. Which stage would you classify this child? Why behaviors led you to choose these stage?
What schemes did the child use? List three.
Give three examples of sensory learning.
6) Temperament ( 5 points)
From your observation, what can you tell about the child’s temperament? List two of the nine inborn temperamental traits (page 122) that you observed and write examples of what the child did that made you choose the two traits.
How did the child’s mother respond to the child’s temperament? What type of “fit” did you observe?
7) If this child was in your infant/toddler care program, and you were using this observation to individualize your program for her, what things might you do to make this care experience a positive one for this child? List five things.
