Background Information
The Retail Sales Division at Western Wireless has not been meeting sales targets for the past three quarters. You have
been hired as a performance management consultant by the new VP of Sales, who recently joined the company after the
last VP was abruptly terminated. Your role is to analyze the current performance management process in place, and make
suggestions to improve the process leading to improved productivity and sales results across the organization.
One of the first things that you do after meeting the team is to review past performance appraisals. You ask for the data
and receive the reviews on paper. Each review is a single page in length, with the goals listed, a rating for each, and some
feedback from the direct manager about performance. A few other details that you realize upon reading over the reviews
include:
• The comments provided on many reviews are very similar, as if the majority of feedback was copied and pasted
on multiple reviews
• The form only has a space for performance goals and overall feedback, but does not include ratings or feedback
about behaviors
• Reviews are conducted for the entire year, with no formal meetings taking place each quarter or midyear
• 89% of the reviews from last year scored a 3/5 or greater, and 11% of reviews were 2.9 or less
• No employees have been terminated for performance since 2016
