Selecting an essay topic out of the themes you have provided for your poster, you will write a
literary commentary on the text you have selected. You should use the PEA and ‘1-3-1’ (point evidence and analysis)
structuring for your essay.
Create a title for your essay. For instance:
Angelou’s Prophecy
A good essay will focus on:
1. The selection of evidence from the text
2. The close-reading and analysis of the evidence selected
3. Demonstrate how the evidence can be interpreted to support a proposed point in not
only the paragraph, but also the essay as a whole
An excellent essay will demonstrate all of the above and:
1. The ability to identify semantic fields, figurative language, and to analyse imagery based
on connotation and denotation (and using the process of ‘Zoom in, Zoom Out’)
2. Describe the literary texts using the appropriate jargon (e.g. stanzas, lines, etc.)
3. Put an essay together that connects to your title and is focused on:
a. what the social issue is and how it is shown
b. how the word choices/stylistic devices/form of literature is effective in engaging a
reader in social commentary.
Hint: Consider elements of tension and foreshadowing in the prose (short stories), while poetry
should more deeply examine usage of figurative language and repetition
