The movie chosen for this essay is called Lagaan. A Bollywood musical
1. Introduction: Try to open with a sentence that attracts your audience and compels them to read on. Provide the title, director, and year of release of the film in the introductory paragraph. Give a short synopsis of the film (not more than 60 words) in case your audience has not seen it, and mention a few awards or nominations it received.
2. Support Paragraph 1: Describe the narration style (see the text) that your filmmakers employed to deliver the narrative (perhaps more than one style). See Barsam. Work in a definition of the film term(s) you use in your explanation.
3. Support Paragraph 2: Who is your most complex character? Discuss his or her complexity, motivation, and development (inner growth). Lay out the narrative addressing and defining these concepts: character goal, inciting incident, obstacles, stakes, crisis, and climax. Read this section. Don’t try to do this off the top of your head or use internet sources or memory of a film you watch a while ago.
4. Support Paragraph 3: In your opinion, how is the narrative style of this film distinctive and reflective of its society? Choose at least one but no more than three of the following determiners to illustrate your findings: mise-en-scene, cinematography, character development, plot structure, point of view, editing style, sound, symbolism, or lighting. Be sure to use the correct terminology. This section will be more interesting if you include a little bit of information about the history of filmmaking specific to the region depicted in your film. This would require some research. Be sure to select quality sources and cite them if you use them.
5. In your conclusion, discuss in what way you found the film particularly effective (or perhaps even ineffective or deserving of a mixed review). I’m interested in your personal reaction and how the film influenced how you see filmmaking or the culture of your film’s origin. Mention whether you would recommend the film and why. (It is okay if you don’t recommend it or have mixed feelings). In your discussion post, please tell us how you accessed the film so your colleagues can find it if they are interested.
