STEP#2: Reading your article
Learn more about how to effectively read an empirical research article here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3687192/
Remember, statistical analyses in the Results section are always followed by a description of what the numbers mean in plain English. Don’t skip the results!
STEP#3: Format your assignment
At the top of your paper, include your full first and last name, your group’s name, and your group’s topic (framed as a question) along the top.
Next, please include the full reference for the paper you are analyzing in proper APA format. Not sure what proper APA format for citing a journal article is? Go Here – the Purdue OWL.You can also use this automatic citation generator for free: https://www.citethisforme.com/us/citation-generator/apa. You do not need any additional citations for the assignment.
Your assignment should be written in Time New Roman or Arial 12pt. font, double-spaced. Save your work as a Word or PDF file before submitting to Turnitin in Blackboard. No other formats will be accepted. Your entire assignment #3 should not exceed 3 pages.
STEP#4: Answer the following questions
In order to complete your Summary and Analysis, answer EACH of the following questions. Your answers should be written in complete sentences and can be brief. Some questions may only require 1-2 sentences to answer. Others may need a brief paragraph. Don’t include the questions below in your writing (Turnitin falsely flags them as plagiarism). Be sure to answer all of the following questions:
Summary (10 points total):
1. Describe the purpose of this study. (2 points)
▪ What is this research article about?
▪ What theoretical idea(s) or research questions inspired the study?
▪ What is the authors’ hypothesis?
2. Who participated in this study? (2 points)
▪ How many participants were included in the study?
▪ Where are they from?
▪ Describe the participants. What was their age range? Gender? Race/Ethnicity? Socioeconomic status?
3. What research design was used? (2 points)
▪ What research design (e.g., correlational, experimental, naturalistic, qualitative) was used?
4. What methods were used to investigate the topic? (2 points)
▪ What were the main variables in the study (you don’t need to describe all of them, just the most important ones)?
▪ How were these variables operationalized (measured)?
5. What were the most notable results? (2 points)
▪ Briefly summarize the findings in your own words.
▪ You do not need to describe the statistics used, just the results.
▪ Did the results support or disprove the researchers’ hypothesis?
Analysis (16 points total):
6. Who do these findings tell us about? Who is missing? (4 points)
▪ Consider the population of adolescents these authors are interested in explaining something about. Is it all adolescents? A certain age group? All genders? Ethnicities? Family types? Etc.?
▪ Then consider the characteristics of the actual participants in this study (see your answer to question #2).
▪ Who might be missing from the authors’ sample? How might this limit the conclusions that can be drawn? Or – what might be different about the results if these other adolescents were included as participants?
7. How to the findings from this article relate to adolescent development? (4 points)
▪ Think about what changes in adolescence and what makes adolescence unique as a developmental period.
▪ Draw at least one specific connection between a concept we have learned in class and a finding in this article.
8. How do these findings relate to your group’s topic? (4 points)
▪ How does this article help you to answer your group’s research question? Be specific!
▪ What does it tell you that you didn’t know before? That other people who have or work with adolescents should know?
9. What lingering questions do you have? (4 points)
▪ Think about what you would do if you were reading this article in order to write your own research paper…you would evaluate how it helps answer your question and THEN what else you need to know before finding another article that could fill that knowledge gap.
▪ So what other information do you need in order to answer your group’s question?
▪ What does this article not answer…that can help guide you to find an article for Assignment #4?
FORMAT (2 points): Paper is no more than 3 pages long, follows all formatting guidelines outlined in the syllabus, and accurately cites the article in APA format at the beginning.
MECHANICS (2 Points): Grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors are RARE and do not detract from reading the paper. Basic sentence structure is good (e.g., avoids run-on sentences, sentence structure is solid).
