Purpose:
After the Panic of 1819, Americans blamed the Bank of the United States (and all banking, for that matter) for the sharp recession. These people distrusted banks because they tended to over-issue paper notes (which can be printed). Like President Andrew Jackson, many Americans believed the only real currency was hard money (gold and silver). For this assignment, you will learn about the push against government involvement in the economy and compare that to today’s distrust of the federal government
Questions:
First, define President Andrew Jackson’s feelings about the federal government’s involvement in the economy and financial institutions (i.e., the Bank of the United States). Use historical information and details from the lesson.
Second, how did Jackson connect his veto of the Banking Bill to protecting the people?
Third, compare Jackson’s feelings to modern-day conservatives’ criticism of the federal government’s involvement in today’s economy and financial institution.
