Describe the selected population, summarize relevant facts about the population (e.g., size within United States, generation, demographic profile), and the population’s experience with oppression, power, and change.

Students are asked to identify a population based on race, ethnicity, religion, age, poverty, gender, sexual orientation,
disability, or other social identities other than their own and connected to their field education experience. This research
paper is designed to offer students an opportunity to think critically about the range of oppressive and discriminatory
practices experienced by marginalized populations as well as appropriate strategies for engaging them as a social
worker.

1. Introduction: Describe the selected population, summarize relevant facts about the population (e.g., size within
United States, generation, demographic profile), and the population’s experience with oppression, power, and
change.

2. History: Discuss the history of the population within American society by identifying the physical, geographic,
social, economic, political experiences, and/ or cultural representations. Discuss how this population been
treated in the United States in the context of your research on this history.

3. Contemporary Experience: Discuss the current state of this population in light of the history. Provide at least
three (3) examples of specific oppressive or discriminatory practices that this population encounters as they
interact with various institutions (i.e., education, economic, social, faith, and health care).

4. Impact of Oppression: Describe the impact of the oppressive experiences/ practices on the population. Identify
and discuss (a) the impact on the individual (bio-psycho-social-spiritual outcomes and others of relevance), (b)
impact on groups (families, population groups), and (c) systemic impacts (i.e., economic, political, institutional).

5. Application of Theory: Identify and define a theory to analyze the treatment and experience faced by the
population (i.e., person in environment construct and/or empowerment, systems, and critical theories). Use the
theory to describe what assumptions, beliefs, fears, or attributions appear to drive the oppression of or
discrimination against this population.

6. Strategies: Identify at least three (3) specific research-based strategies crucial to supporting culturally
competent & anti-oppressive social work practice when working with this population. Please identify at least
one (1) individual level, one (1) group level, and one (1) system level strategy. Once described, please discuss
how these strategies may impact the engagement, assessment, intervention, evaluation processes at individual,
group, and systemic levels. The strategies you choose should be based on research and you should be able to cite
references from which you learned about the applicable strategies.
