The purpose of this assignment is for you to evaluate the
book King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of
Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa using a geographic
perspective.

It’s incumbent that you are able to draw on concepts we’ve
discussed thus far this semester, such as colonialism, globalization,
capitalism, indigenous rights and resistance, development, genocide, and racial
and environmental justice, as well as your understandings of sub-Saharan Africa.
You should also be able to draw upon and contextualize significant events, such
as the Berlin Conference (1884).

You will need to answer the following questions. I recommend
using quotes from the book to support your ideas and evaluation.
1. Briefly
summarize the book. In this portion of the review you will provide the main
points and introduce the main characters.
2. What
characters did you agree or disagree with? Why? Explain.
3. Describe the
major geographic concepts (capitalism, genocide, colonialism, etc.) and themes
of the book.
4. Evaluate the
author’s major argument and/or purpose. What worked well? How does the author
use findings or evidence to support his argument or the purpose of the book?
How did the book appeal to you? Emotionally? Does the book accomplish what it
sets out to do?

5. Evaluate the
author’s writing style. What did you like or dislike? Why? What makes this book
good or bad? Who would you recommend this book to and why?
