For your final assessment, you will write a paper evaluating the differences between a public health approach to drug use and abuse versus a criminalization approach. The purpose of this assignment is to make a case for the benefits of one approach over the other.
In your paper you should:
Describe what a public health approach to treating drug use and addiction is
Provide specific examples from the readings about how, when, and/or where public health approaches to drugs have been used
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of using a public health approach to shape treatment options and laws
Describe what a criminalization approach to treating drug use and addiction is
Provide specific examples from the readings about how, when and/or where criminalization approaches to drugs have been used
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of using a criminalization approach to shape treatment options and laws
Thorough papers will be about two pages, single-spaced – you may go over a bit if needed, but good papers will not be shorter than this.
It is expected that you will be referencing the class readings and other reputable sources in your answer. This means that you will need to use appropriate in-text citations throughout your paper and also include a bibliography. Whenever you directly quote, paraphrase, or use a statistic from someone else in your paper, you should reference the author of the information using an appropriate in-text citation that includes the author(s) last name(s), year of publication, and page number(s) within parentheses, such as: (Legerski 2019:12). For any in-text reference you use, you should also include a properly formatted full reference at the end of your paper in a bibliography. Please note though that your bibliography should NOT count toward the page recommendation – you should produce about 2 pages of text, plus a bibliography with any references you use. A Quick Style Guide summarizing ASA formatting is attached above.
