The general purpose of this speech is for you to prepare and deliver a speech to the
audience to inform them of a political, economic, or social issue, a historical event,
force, or movement, a theory, principle, or concept, person, place or activity. You
have many options but it must not be a persuasive speech. You will use at least one
visual aid. The audience needs not only to be told about the subject but also to be
shown with examples, cases, analogies, comparisons, and contrasts and by moving
from what they know or recognize to what they do not know. This is a research
based speech, move beyond your own knowledge of the topic. You need to cite a
minimum of 4 credible sources. Your language should be vivid.
1. In the introduction, gain the audience’s attention do not introduce yourself as
your attention getter. Next, be sure to include identification by telling the
audience how this information affects them. Third, preview the speech and
transition into the body of the speech.
2. In the body of the speech, develop 3 major points that cover the most
relevant aspects of the topic. Describe your main points vividly and
concisely; make sure the knowledge level is appropriate for your audience,
define, explain and cite key terms.
a. Build your credibility by using sound arguments and citing trustworthy
sources.
b. Use 4 oral references
3. In the conclusion, review the content, i.e. the 3 major ideas of the speech.
4. Use clear transitions between major points.
5. End your speech in a memorable way. “Thank you” or “that’s it” is not
appropriate.
6. Use at least one visual aid to enhance the audience’s understanding of the
topic.
7. The visual aid must be appropriate, professional, of adequate size, displayed
properly, and free of distractions. The speech length is 4 minutes, do not
ramble, and make your words count.
