Mental Health Care in
Different Cultures
Purpose:
In American culture, mental health care is widely available,
and the promotion of mental health awareness are valued. In a 2020 poll conducted by the American Psychological
Association, “Eighty seven percent of American adults agreed that having a
mental health disorder is nothing to be ashamed of and 86% said that they
believe that people with mental health disorders can get better.” The purpose of this assignment is to
look at how attitudes toward mental illness vary among countries and cultures.
Task: (1) Your
task is to select a country of interest, contingent upon instructor
approval. (2) Research a country by
typing in the internet search bar the name of the country and then .gov or you
may interview a person from a different country who is familiar with mental
health care in that country. (3) Finally, answer 10 on the questions below with
a 2-4 complete sentence response for each question. Each question is worth 1 point. (4) Please be
sure to name your country and to cite your information. Informational resources are also listed at the
end of the assignment.

practice, hospital settings).

are the most common types of therapies, care or treatment used (cognitive,
insight, behavioral, drug, group)?
11. Is
there gender, socioeconomic or cultural differences in psychological
disorders? What about in comparison to
the United States?
12. Are
there gender or cultural differences that might impact treatment?
13. What
are the religious aspects that might interfere with the treatment of a
psychological disorder?
14. What
are the social aspects that might interfere with the treatment of a
psychological disorder?
15. What
types of psychologists are most common (clinical, child, developmental,
biological, environmental, industrial/organizational, or cognitive?
16. What
types of stresses do individuals experience?
Is there an impact on heart disease or immune system responses?
17. What
types of coping strategies do individuals use (meditation, religion,
volunteerism, hobbies)?
18. What
types of social support networks are most available to people (family, church,
work)?
19. How
is the issue of suicide addressed? Is
there a stigma?
Criteria for Success: Your assignment will be graded based on the
following criteria: (a) Do you have a 2-4 complete sentence response for each
question that is free of spelling and grammar errors? (b) Is

all the questions that are clear to the reader.
