This is an academic essay so you must have: An original title, Introduction, Thesis, Body that follows the thesis and a Conclusion. The primary purpose of descriptive writing is to describe a person, place or thing in such a way that a picture is formed in the reader’s mind. Capturing an event through descriptive writing involves paying close attention to the details by using all of your five senses. This is called imagery.
Descriptive writing also incorporates figurative language. This will include similes, metaphors, personification, to name just a few examples. Make sure you review these terms so you can demonstrate your understanding in your essay. Descriptive writing is expository and informative. It seeks to present the facts or details to the reader, but not interpret their meaning. In other words, descriptive writing states ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘where’ – but does not evaluate the ‘why’, ‘how’, or ‘so what?’
Like Berne in “Ground Zero,” write a description of a place (neighborhood, workplace, beach, downtown, etc.) from several different vantage points. Make sure each of your perspectives provides different information about the place you are describing. Make sure to incorporate sensory details and figurative language.
