Your project is to design a map about a subject of your choosing and generated from a geodatabase that you create. Along with your map, you’ll also submit a three-page (double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font) report detailing your mapping process and the corresponding mxd and gdb files.
Your map can be about any subject in any region of the world. It is up to you to find the appropriate data (you can find a list of data resources in the Data, Readings, and Handouts section of our Blackboard). Your map should have:
o At least three layers. For example, one layer is your basemap (e.g. US states, New York state, NYC counties, etc.). Other layers could contain demographic information joined to another geography of your choosing
o Use some kind of geoprocessing (review Week 13 lecture on the different tools you can use)
o Use appropriate symbology, normalization, and data classification
o Be formatted correctly with a map title, north arrow, scale bar, legend, and data citations in APA format (placed in the bottom right-hand corner)
You will likely use data from a number of different sources. Maybe your basemap comes from NYC Open Data, while your demographic information comes from the Census. You need to put them all in one place so that you can create your map. That place is a geodatabase.
