Detailed research proposal (asian context)

Research topic – Hourly rounding to improve patient quality of life (Nursing) . quantitative research proposal .

* 1500 – 2000 word written submission which is a detailed research proposal. (+/- 10% = up to 2200 words)
* Your research proposal should contain the following sections.
– Study title & background to the problem
– Study objectives, significance and design
– Sampling & recruitment
– Data collection & data analysis
– Ethical considerations & Rigour (Reliability & Validity / Trustworthiness)

* Each of these sections should be approximately 350 – 400 words. If one section requires more words it is possible to ‘borrow’ words from another section. The total should be 1500 – 2000 words.

* In-text references and headings are included in the word count.
* A cover page is required
* A contents page is not required
* A minimum of 8 references is required for a ‘satisfactory’ mark for referencing. APA 7th should be used.

Title and Background
Title:
* Quantitative ‐ key variables, study population, methodology/paradigm, context
* Qualitative ‐ phenomenon of interest, group under study, methodology/paradigm, context Background to the problem:
* What is known already about the issue? What have others found? (4‐5 articles)
* What is the gap in knowledge?
* What will the study attempt to do in order to answer the gap in knowledge?
* Is the study guided by a theoretical/conceptual framework? If so, what is it and how will it be used?

Study objectives, significance and design
Objectives:
* Translate the research problem / purpose statement / research question / hypothesis into specific objectives – usually 4
* Tell the reader specifically what your study will be doing to answer the gap in knowledge
* Objectives need to have a specific focus Significance:
* Why is your study important?
* Study significance should relate to study objectives Research design:
* Will you be using a quantitative or qualitative approach and why?
* Within quantitative or qualitative research is there a specific research tradition that you want to use and why?
* Is the study retrospective or prospective? (this may not be applicable to your study)
* Is the study longitudinal or cross sectional?
* Why is this the best design to answer the research question or problem?

Sampling & recruitment
* What sampling strategy do you intend to use and why?
* What sample size do you intend to achieve?
* How will you determine if the sample size is adequate?
* How will participants be recruited? What is the process?
* Who will recruit participants and where will they be recruited?

Data collection & data analysis
Data collection:
* What strategy will be used for data collection, i.e. what method and why?
* Who will collect data?
* Do the data collectors have appropriate training?
* Timing of data collection
* Setting of data collection
* Maintenance and storage of data
* NB: You are not required to submit the questionnaires or interview questions you intend to use for data collection . You are only required to describe them and the questions/data that you intend to collect. Data analysis:
* What method of data analysis will you be using and why?
* Describe process of analysis
* Consider level of significance

Ethical considerations &Rigour (reliability& validity/trustworthiness)
Ethical considerations:
* What permission will you seek?
* Process of informed consent
* Privacy and confidentiality
* Voluntary participation with freedom to withdraw
* How would you deal with adverse events?
NB: You are not required to submit consent forms and participants information sheets.

Rigour:
Quantitative – reliability & validity
* Are data collection tools reliable? If so, how was/will this be determined?
* Are data collection tools valid? What is the evidence to support this?
* How will internal validity of the study be assured?
* How will external validity of the study be assured? Qualitative – trustworthiness
* How will you address credibility?
* How will you address dependability?
* How will you address confirmability?
* How will you address transferability?

Referencing
* The proposal must be supported by the use of literature
* Minimum of 8 references
* Use in‐text referencing for each section
* References must conform to APA 7 format
* In‐text referencing is included in the word count. You have 2000 words +/‐ 10% so up to 2200.
