Context: For Paper 1, students will be asked to identify the major problems in the Alabama and Mississippi prison systems and to determine the causes of those problems. As you already know, St. Clair Correctional Facility has many serious problems. Without comparing St.Clair to other correctional institutions in the state, however, there is no way to know if the problems found at St. Clair are simply local issues or pervasive problems across the prison system. By comparing a multitude of correctional facilities, students will be able to better understand the major problems across the prison system as well as the causes of those problems.
Directions: Read “Have Alabama Prison Conditions Changed 7 Months After Scathing DOJ Report?” and “Why Alabama Could Lose Control of its Dangerous Prisons.” Download “Why Alabama Could Lose Control of its Dangerous Prisons.” Both these articles report upon many of the endemic problems within the Alabama prison system.
As you read, building on the previous two readings on the Alabama prison system, identify what you believe to be at least one major problem in this system. Also, try to determine what are the potential cause(s) of this major problem(s).
Based on all four readings on the Alabama prison system, in at least a two-page paper identify at least one major problem in the Alabama prison system as well as the possible cause(s) to that problem. As part of the analysis, be sure to incorporate direct quotes from the texts to support the presented ideas and conclusions. For guidance on how to best use direct quotations in academic writing, review “Using Evidence” and “Integrating Sources into Your Writing.”
Assessment: Assessment will be based on how well the assignment clearly presents and explains at least one major problem, and the possible cause(s) of that problem, in the Alabama prison system. Claims and explanations should be based on all four readings and supported by direct quotes from the texts. Assignment should be at least two full pages, double-spaced.
