For the final essay, you will read three questions carefully and then choose only ONE question to answer. You will then write a thesis-centered essay of 500-800 words in response to this one question using the relevant reading or readings to support your writing.
Note the following:
This is an exam. You must do your own work.
Focus on the texts named in the question. While you may reference outside experiences and/or texts, this is not a research assignment.
Because there is only a final draft to turn in, you must review your own work before turning it in.
The final essay assignment will be available from 12:01am on Wednesday, June 9th to 11:59pm on Friday, June 11th.
You will save your essay as a Word document (.doc or .docx) using Microsoft Office, Google Docs (File>Download>Microsoft Word), or other word processor, and post that essay. The essay is due Friday, June 11th, 11:59pm. Note that this is right before midnight on Saturday.
Do not write your essay in the Comments box. This box is so that you can leave a note or comment for your instructor about your essay that you have submitted.
You may use a dictionary, the readings, your own notes on the readings, and the class discussion boards for reference.
Remember to do the following:
Develop a thesis that takes a clear stance or position.
Organize your thoughts. An outline can help do this.
Use MLA in-text citation to support your claim with quotes or paraphrases from the relevant reading or readings. (You must use at least one cited idea per relevant reading or readings.)
Use your own observations, experiences, or other sources to develop your claims.
Discuss how your citations and ideas are relevant to your thesis.
Exam Questions:
Choose one of the following questions to answer in an essay:
How do the stories of our culture (childrens stories, TV shows, movies, video games, etc.) affect us and/or our relationships with others? Reference Chu and/or Chocano in your response.
In what ways are joy and fear useful emotions for us? Reference Smith and Walker in your response.
How does it help us when we reframe an emotion, like when we call fears stories or when we understand that pleasure and joy are different? Reference Smith and/or Walker in your response.
Note: Arthur Chu uses he/him/his pronouns; Carina Chocano, Zadie Smith, and Karen Thompson Walker use she/her/hers pronouns. Use full names at first reference. After that, you can use just last names, but dont use just first names.
[After the end of your essay, start a new page. Copy this informal Works Cited page as the last page of your essay and revise based on which work or works you reference in your final exam. If you reference two or more works, delete the unneeded entries and change the title to Works Cited (with the s at the end). If you reference just one work, delete the unneeded entries and change the title to Work Cited (with no s at the end). If you reference an outside reading, add an informal Works Cited entry for that work and put it in alphabetical order.]
[Informal] Works Cited or Work Cited [revise as needed]
Chocano, Carina. Introduction. You Play the Girl: On Playboy Bunnies, Stepford Wives, Train Wrecks, and Other Mixed Messages.
Chu, Arthur. Your Princess Is in Another Castle: Misogyny, Entitlement, and Nerds.
Smith, Zadie. Joy.
