Assignment Description:
Meme Final Project (25 pts.)
Students are required to choose an original topic/ subject related to the course (CLASS, RACE, GENDER) and create an ORIGINAL meme. Some topics to consider; voting, police profiling, race, homelessness, gender discrimination). This project will be divided in two parts. (Part 1- research/ Part 2- Artistic creation of MEME) Students must upload final project in Canvas by, Tuesday, December 14th at 11:00pm. NO EXTENSIONS WILL BE GRANTED.
What is a meme?
An Internet meme, more commonly known simply as a meme is an idea, behavior, or style (meme) that is spread via the Internet, often through social media platforms and especially for humorous purposes. What is considered a meme may vary across different communities on the Internet and is subject to change over time. These days; however, they’ve come to be known as those images with a bold quote, sentiment or saying. They are a vehicle to express commentary on a phenomenon or a relatable event and are shared on social media to capture attention or elicit a quick laugh.
Example: President Joe Biden’s Inauguration (2021)
During the inauguration of President Biden, a picture of Sen. Bernie Sanders wearing large mittens and sitting alone on a chair with a morose expression on his face was quickly turned into thousands of different memes that place his image against all sorts of historical, geographical and cultural backgrounds.
Project Steps:
1. Choose your topic. Pick a subject that is important to you, as well as one you can visualize. Keep your focus narrow and to the point. More than one idea confuses your audience, so have one main idea for your MEME.
2. Time for some research – you need to know your stuff! Try to get the most current and up to date facts on your topic. Statistics and references can add to a quality/ creative MEME. You want to be convincing and accurate. You can use readings from the class.
3. Develop your own meme- using the following tech tools- canva, PPT or other. Please remember that your meme must be ORIGINAL. Any form of plagiarism will result in an automatic zero.
4. Add a phrase to help explain- your meme. It can be short or just a few words to help better express your image to the audience. (See examples).

5. You must write a paragraph (minimum 6 sentences) explaining your meme and research. In addition, you must cite your resources. This collectively should be one page.
6. Please submit final meme in PNG, PDF, JPEG format along with your one paragraph and sources to canvas by Tuesday, December 14th at 11:00pm.
