In approximately 750-800 words, develop your views on multiculturalism and marginal voices in
the U.S., and the ways in which they bring to American cultures, such as diversity, languages,
beliefs, different ways of thinking, and the demand for greater inclusivity. This assignment asks
that you base your thinking on Topic 2 materials.
Nonfiction pieces such as Amy Tan’s “Mother Tongue” and Bharati Mukherjee for example,
show that one’s identity is tied to language and cultural specificity and that mainstream America
sometimes misreads and misrepresents one’s place in the U.S. based on a set of assumptions.
MLK’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” points out the need to face and overcome injustice by
means of civil disobedience, which should always be nonviolent and with peaceful negotiation in
mind. James Baldwin’s short story “Sonny’s Blues” poignantly paints the lives of African
Americans, and how poverty and prejudices can dampen a person’s will to dream, stay
optimistic, and be courageously authentic.
DACA and Dreamers’ uncertain realities highlight matters ranging from immigration,
citizenship, to the politics of belonging in the U.S.
As you can see, Topic 2 has given you different voices and perspectives on what it feels like to
be/remain an outsider, culturally speaking, and in terms of race and citizenship status. Is the U.S.
a nation that celebrates multiculturalism and difference? What work lies ahead to achieve a more
perfect union for all who live in and/or see America as home?
As you work on the essay, keep in mind the assignment requirements as stated below:
1. The essay must demonstrate intellectual engagement with concepts explored in Topic 2.
Elaborating on those concepts meaningfully is key.
2. The essay must use two assigned readings as textual support. The assigned readings are the
basis of your thinking, and they add focus and specificity to your main ideas.
3. The essay may follow the five-paragraph essay format (the introduction – three body
paragraphs – the conclusion), but students are highly encouraged to structure their work in
ways they see fit. Organize the essay to best showcase your critical thinking and writing.
