It is easy to forget that every day we conform to a wide variety of social norms. You may not think of yourself as a conformist, but it is very likely that you are. Part of the reason our conformity is not obvious to us is that it becomes a habit and we somewhat automatically do what is expected of us by social norms. This assignment will wake you up out of that slumber by asking to to identify a common social norm that has a lot of consensus and most people would recognize. You are then required to break this social norm or behave deviantly (opposite to what is expected) and monitor the reactions of others when you do. The assignment offers an opportunity to understand social norms in greater depth and to appreciate the ways in which social norms are enforced when people break them.
