-The person I interviewed was a friend named Zachary who works as an Independent Duty Corpsman in the Navy, and has an experience in Mental health, as well as working with COVID-19 patients. He was the best choice and he was a good enough friend to spend the time conducting the interview.
-My interview questions were:
The topic we will be discussing is Post Pandemic Mental Health from the medical provider or patient perspective.
The purpose of this interview is to explore the potential impacts of the COVID 19 pandemic on mental health from either the provider prospective, or a patient perspective. The following questions were created by a group of students from The George Washington University who are enrolled in the course “Psychosocial Aspects of Health and Illness”. The purpose of this interview is not for research, but for educational purposes only.
**Our plan is to interview a medical provider or a patient (based on availability/access).
Questions for Medical Providers will be listed as “MP” and questions for patients as “P”**
1)
MP: How has the pandemic affected your practice?
-Any major changes to initial approach or interview of the patient?
– Elaborate as necessary.
P: How has the pandemic affected your approach to seeking medical care?
-Do you have any issues with trusting medical professionals responsible for
caring for you?
-If so, why?
**These questions set the tone and allow for additional questions that help discover our topic**
2)
MP: Has there been any increase in mental health patient encounters as the pandemic is beginning to fizzle out?
What specifically?
Why do you think that is?
Did you see more Mental Health during the pandemic or post pandemic?
P: Do you notice an increase in depression or anxiety like symptoms amongst your friends, family or coworkers?
What do you think is the reason for this?
3)
MP: Is there any relationship between Mental Health Patients who have had COVID and those that have not?
Is there any notable upticks in different DSM5 diagnoses?
Why do you think that is?
Is there any correlation with age group or sex?
Can you elaborate more on what may be some factors if any that may have caused this trend?
P: Have you noticed persons who have had COVID, versus those that haven’t, have any decrease in their mood, focus, cognition or social abilities?
Which is most prevalent?
Is there any correlation with age group or sex?
4)
MP: Have there been any barriers to care while we maintain airborne PPE precautions?
What are they?
Which is the most difficult to overcome?
P: Have you been seen by a medical provider, for any reason, post pandemic?
Did you feel like it was difficult to communicate with them, or did they ask you any additional questions that were atypical?
Was the status of your mental health discussed?
(These questions are pertinent on the Medical Provider side because the capability to communicate effectively with all patients, especially mental health patients is a necessity for proper determination of care)
5)
MP: Are/have you provided any telehealth services to treat mental health?
If so, are patients more likely to seek mental health services via telehealth or in person?
Did this very pre/post pandemic?
P: Have you or someone you know utilized telehealth for mental health counseling?
How did you feel about the process?
Can you explain why it was or wasn’t adequate to meet your needs?
6)
MP and P: What, if anything, do you see as the long-term effects on the Mental Health system post pandemic?
**Closing statements and courtesies**
