Instructions:
Answer the following 3 questions. Your answers must be based on the assigned readings. Review the assigned chapters and use the notes that you took throughout the term for these chapters in each of the required books. Be specific in your answers. Answer all parts of each question. In your answers, do not use long quotes. Explain what you mean in your own words. The exam must be typed, double-spaced, between 2,000 and 2,500 words. You must also include a word count in your heading on the top of the first page of your exam, along with your name, and Soc253. Do not include the exam questions in your answers.
Do not discuss this exam with anyone, either in the class or outside of it. Please refer to statement on academic integrity on page 1 of the Syllabus.
Question 1:
In the Clarke Reader, both Hagedorn and Murphy, Waldorf and Reinarman analyze the use and sale of drugs. Discuss two differences between these 2 articles.
Question 2:
Both Becker in the Outsiders (Chapters 7 and 8) and Erikson in the Wayward Puritans (Chapters 4 and 5) analyze the roles played by rule makers and rule enforcers in the creation of deviance and crime. Discuss 2 similarities and 2 differences between the analysis by Becker and the analysis by Erikson.
Question 3:
In Stigma (Chapters 1 and 2) and the Clarke Reader (Chapter 42), both Goffman and Marvasti analyze how actors with a stigma manage their spoiled identity, when they interact with “normals” in social situations.
Discuss what Goffman means by the following: “The central feature of the stigmatized individual’s situation…is a question of…acceptance”, and “The information of most relevance in the study of stigma…is information about an individual…The information…is conveyed by the very person it is about…through bodily expression in the…presence [of others] who receive the expression.”
How would Goffman respond to Shakespeare’s famous line from “As You Like It”:
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
