Nursing as a profession is strengthened when nursing knowledge is built on sound theory. This body of knowledge shapes and is shaped by how nurses see the world. The word theory has many definitions but, generally it refers to a group of related concepts, definitions, and statements that describe a certain view of nursing phenomena from which to describe, explain, predict, or prescribe outcomes. Although nursing theory dates back to Florence Nightingale, most nursing theory was developed in the second half of the twentieth century. The ultimate goal of nursing theory is to support excellence in practice (Black, 2013).
For this threaded discussion research a theorist **(You MAY NOT choose one of the following caring theorists: Boykin & Schoenhofer, Leininger, Paterson & Zderad, Swanson, Watson)**

Your initial post MUST address the following:

· Name of theorist and the name of their particular theory

· Four concepts (listed below) or metaparadigm of nursing: The concepts of most importance to nursing practice and research.

**Nursing philosophies, models, and theories contain most or all of these concepts. **

A. Theorist’s definition of Nursing, and purpose according to this theory

B. Definition of Health or well-being as stated in the theory

C. Definition of Person

D. Definition of Environment

This Discussion Board will focus on how you see nursing theory being used in nursing practice. After reading about the work of our nursing theories, pick the one that ‘speaks’ to you the most. Describe a typical nursing situation where you work (or attend clinical courses or have had significant interactions with nurses) and then break it down using the 4 major concepts of one of the theories. Do you use Orem where you work? Does Rogers guide your thinking when you work? Or do you wish the concepts of Leininger could be more easily used? Do you see evidence of one of these theorists as you examine the nursing practice of others? Theory arises from a study of practice, so let’s see if our practice supports theory.
