Discuss an additional song that provides a counterpoint (contrasting example) to the song you devoted your paper to. For example, if you chose to write about a Lil Wayne song because it was a great example of Signifying, perhaps a counterpoint could be a Lupe Fiasco song that is a lot more literal. You might talk about the differences in the examples, and then use it as an opportunity to talk about the differences in how those artists have been received by the public, or where there from, or whatever you think might explain how different they are as artists. If you were talking about Vince Staples’ “Norf Norf” as an iconically West Coast song, perhaps you could choose a song from an artist from Southern California that doesn’t fit the mold of any of the West Coast subgenres we discuss in this class, or doesn’t particularly sound West Coast at all. Hip hop’s diversity is part of what makes it so powerful. We need Kendrick Lamar, who is so careful and reflexive in his representation of Compton and his role as a symbol of that community, and we also need Kanye West, who gives us a lens into his own unique mind and ego. The point of this extra credit addition to this paper would be to show two contrasting examples that are both interesting and valuable in their own ways. Minimum 500 words for up to 5 points extra credit on your final grade (that’s a lot!).
