Sociological Autobiography #1
Learning Objective: Discuss and analyze how social factors such as culture, socialization, statuses, and group memberships influence individual behaviors and perspectives
How did you become who you are? We often use individual stories to explain our identities, roles, likes and dislikes, occupations, and general life outcomes. The sociological perspective helps us think critically about how who we are has as much to do with the culture, social status, socialization, and groups we are part of (social structure) as it does with individual choices or preferences (agency).
Instructions:
Using at least five (5) of the key concepts from our readings, explain how you became who you are today. Make sure to specifically address each of the following items:
• How does your social position/location—race, class, gender, age, neighborhood, etc.—influence your behaviors and perspectives (worldview)?
• How and why might you view and do things differently if you occupied a different social position?
• How and why have your social position and perspectives changed over time? How and why might they change in the future?
Key Concepts
Norms, Social Statuses, In- groups and Out Groups, Reference Groups, Primary and Secondary Groups, Agents of Socialization (be specific), Social Capital, Values, Culture, Subcultures/Countercultures
Format
Your biography must be approximately three pages in length and incorporate at least five of the concepts listed above. Clearly indicate the concept you are explaining in either bold type or italics. You may also use other concepts we have covered thus far. Papers must be approximately three pages (900 words) typed, double-spaced in 12-point Times New Roman font with one inch margins. Writing assignments must be submitted via eCampus using the “Upload File” option— improperly submitted assignments will not be graded.
