The following prompts are to be used as springboards for the approach you take with Essay 1. They pertain to our readings and class discussions, but in your paper be sure that your points of support are primarily drawn from the texts we’ve read. Your outside, secondary sources (there should be two) should be used to support the points you are drawing from the texts. Also be sure that you include a clear thesis statement in the introduction to your paper and that you close your paper with a concluding paragraph.
Feel free to interpret the prompts as you will. You may compose your paper in support of a topic or theme we have discussed in class, but you are also welcome to advance a thesis or perspective that we have not discussed—or which is counter to our previous discussions (kudos always awarded to creative critical thinking!). Finally, if there is another idea you have on your mind for the paper, feel free to propose it to me.
Discuss and analyze the cycle of the Little Red Riding Hood stories. Focus on what you see as seminal differences or similarities between the versions. Avoid too much summary by focusing writing on the implications of what the stories present.
Prompt 2: Analyze a selection of the Cinderella story cycle. Because these are slightly longer and more individually substantive, restrict your main focus to only one or two of the stories to give yourself the chance of going into sufficient depth.
Prompt 3: Analyze “The Little Mermaid” with attention paid to what HCA signals to the reader regarding the nature of beauty, love, suffering, and purity (independently or in relation to each other).
Prompt 4: Analyze the selection of HCA stories with attention paid to the dominant themes that unite his stories. What primary message(s) does HCA seem to be communicating and how does it strike you?
Remember, the most effective papers have a more limited scope in order to go deeper into their points, as opposed to papers that tackle very broad and general topics or themes. If you need more clarification on what this means, let me know.

Length: 3 – 4 pages (with 3.5 being the sweet spot) in MLA/APA format.
