Your research paper should address a policy issue pertaining to a specific sector, industry or community, within a developing (or least developed) country. Your goal is to assess the impact of the policy (or potential impact) on some outcomes of interest. Examples of previous research paper topics follow after the Instructions.
Instructions:
Select a country and a ‘sector’ within that country
Select a public policy issue concerning that particular country. The policy can be a piece of legislation, regulation (domestic or an international treaty obligation), expenditure, tax, action by the State or one of its agencies, or a reform.
Provide the necessary background (e.g., institutions, events, policy history, actors involved) and context for the policy issue.
Discuss and analyze the economic importance of the policy issue for businesses, consumers, and/or local governments.
Interpret the experience or outcome associated with the ‘policy’ or lack of it in your country case study. Identify your metric(s) for assessing the impact or consequences.
Recommend how policymakers and civil society, and other affected parties, should go forward with the policy or reforms.
The length of the paper should be between 10 – 12 double-spaced typed pages (font size 12), excluding bibliography and title page, but including footnotes, tables, and charts or figures.
Label all of the graphs; and provide legends and notes.
Your title page must include a 150 – 200 word abstract that summarizes the nature and contribution of your paper. The Introduction should provide the purpose, motivation, and outline of the paper. The conclusion should briefly summarize the main points and significance of the paper, and address the limitations or areas for further research. The middle (body) of the paper should develop your arguments in a logical, orderly manner.
Remember this is not an opinion piece. Though you may follow a journalistic writing approach, the focus should be on the logic of your key hypothesis, the novelty of your topic, the evidence you provide to substantiate your arguments and the validity of the approach you use.
The following outline provides key suggestions on possible sections of your paper (Still, do not consider this as a rule only a rough guideline).
Introduction: Clearly state your hypothesis/question and highlight key findings.
Literature Review: Provide a brief review of the related literature. What is the underlying conceptual framework (logic) and what is the consensus in the field?
Methods/Data: Describe the data: source, measurement, relevance to study, etc. Describe approach used: correlation, regression, scatter plots, etc.
Results/Discussion: Present your results; discuss the significance of your results Vsv. testing your hypothesis. Do you find anomalies or are results as expected? Discover why results are holding? What lies behind your results? Why do you observe such relationships? What is the logic (underlying concept)? Use appropriate graphs, statistical tools.
Conclusions: Focus on key goals and key findings of the study. Discuss any important policy implications, identify questions for future research.
