Hearing, et al.’s “Social Media and the Progressive Limitations on Public Sector Employees’ First Amendment Right to Free Speech”
To complete this essay, develop an argument claiming how you believe each author is using rhetoric and why. This will be supported with clear and direct evidence from each essay to show why you think that. This will be analyzed in order to show exactly how each part works.
Introduction: Your introduction should attract readers with an interesting hook and discuss the article or essay to be analyzed. It will end with a thesis statement that covers your argument on the topic. This should include all three parts of a thesis (what, how, why) and should discuss how you will analyze the author’s use of rhetoric in order to appeal to a specific audience.
Body Paragraphs: You will have at least 3 body paragraphs (you may use more if needed)
Body 1: Audience Analysis – Start your argument by making a claim towards who each author’s target audience is. Be as specific as possible as to who this group is (use specific demographics such as age, race, etc.; do not jut say “workers” but what sort of workers from what backgrounds or fields?). Note: Each author is looking at a different audience, so you should have two distinct groups being discussed here. Discuss why you think the audience is the target of the individual author. Why is the author targeting this group? Why would they be a good target for the argument?
Body 2: Rhetorical Analysis Compare/Contrast- Compare and/or contrast the how and why each author uses rhetoric. Use this to compare how the two audiences are being targeted similarly or how the audiences are being target differently. Discuss at least two different uses of rhetoric including word choice, style, or rhetorical devices, at least one from each article. Using quotes, analyze how the rhetoric is used in each essay and why the author is using them. Why are these pieces of rhetoric appealing towards their audiences?
Body 3: Modes Analysis Compare/Contrast – Compare and/or contrast which mode of persuasion each author primarily uses and why. Use this to compare what mode is being used and whether the authors are using the same tactics (i.e. both using pathos/emotions) or different (i.e. one uses logos/logic, the other pathos/emotions). Discuss which of the modes of persuasion are used in each argument: logos, pathos, or ethos. Use quotes and examples to show how the author uses these in the essay and discuss why these modes are used to appeal to their audience.
Conclusion: Your conclusion will finish the essay by wrapping up your ideas and giving your reader something to think about. You can restate your thesis, but if you do, then do something interesting for your reader.
