Discuss for overcoming the negative effects of imbalances in power and for bringing about a condition of shared power. Be specific about your reasons for questioning the value of such measures for improving the prospects for the successful management of conflict.
People from high-power distance cultures respect differences in power (pp. 173-174) even when that respect may be to their disadvantage. To prevent a disadvantage from occurring, what would you advise someone from such a culture to do in managing conflict with superiors?
The means that Folger, Poole, and Stutman describe on pp. 175-176 for “fostering shared power” ([a] identifying and emphasizing common, overarching goals; [b] distributing resources equally or at least equitably; and [c] recognizing that group members are the source of power and they participate in the negotiation and renewal of power) are the type that some would describe as “sounding good on paper.” What problems can you see resulting from efforts to implement the suggestions? How difficult do you think such problems might be to overcome?
