Discuss how adaptations to local environments have likely influenced the evolution of skin color in different geographic regions around the world.

Below are six (6) possible essay questions of which four (4) will appear on the exam. The expectation for these essays is the composition of fully developed paragraphs for each question in the prompt. These should be “robust” essays given that you have plenty of time to prepare and take the exam.

1. From Chapter 5. Is race a valid, biologically meaningful concept? Why or why not? Discuss how adaptations to local environments have likely influenced the evolution of skin color in different geographic regions around the world.

2. From Chapters 1 & 2. Discuss how physical anthropologists use the scientific method and detail the six key attributes that make humans unique relative to other species. Finally, what was Darwin’s major contribution to the theory of evolution?

3. From Chapters 3 & 4. Use what you know about meiosis to explain Mendel’s law of segregation and the law of independent assortment. What is the evolutionary significance of meiosis? How do mutations create new genetic variation and how do gene drift and gene flow redistribute existing variation?

4. From Chapter 4. What, according to population geneticists, is a species? Explain how micro-evolution, macro-evolution, and reproductive isolation contribute to the formation of new species? Give an example of a speciation event.

5. From Chapter 6. Discuss the anatomical characteristics that relate to primates’ arboreal adaptation. Next, describe the similarities and differences in diet and dentition among prosimians, old work monkeys, and apes.

6. From Chapter 8. Differentiate between relative and absolute dating techniques of fossils. Give an example of each. Why is it critical that paleontologists reconstruct past environments to provide a complete picture of a particular fossil’s evolution? Name one way in which paleontologists reconstruct past environments?

you should compose full paragraph responses for each question in the prompt and use examples from any of the sources you have been engaging with: the textbook, articles, video clips, and films. Provide examples and justify the claims you make.
