One challenge that can come across in ethical decision-making as a leader is getting others to be an example to the organization. In the Ethical Decision Making interview, Dr. Byas discusses how ethics has to be hard-wired into the organization, as it’s not enough to have just a CEO be an example, or even the whole committee be an example. The concept of ethics can be difficult for two main reasons. The first reason it can be difficult is to determine whose ethical and unethical. Is that left to just the prominent leader or a whole committee? Because what if that committee only consists of particular views, then those of the general organization could be made to feel under-represented. Then it could be questioned if the proposed ethical decision-making only serves a specific group of people. Secondly, there’s a possibility that the leader(s) could disagree on what is moral and what isn’t.

I work in healthcare currently, and though I work in medical supplies, this topic is relevant to my line of work. I wanted to relate this standpoint to a current model. The concepts of ethics have come up frequently in the decision of mask vs. no mask/vaccines vs. no vaccines. It is common knowledge that the 45th president of the US initially took an anti-mask and social distancing position, often publicly going against the guidelines and advice of the CDC. There was debate about the ethics in the US government regarding COVID-19 and if leaders’ positions were considering the wellness of all the general public. Though I believe most people took place they truly felt, the inconsistency of US public leaders may have influenced them. This inconsistency contributed more to the current political divide in the US, and very unethical positions were taken.

I conclude the most important part of ethical decision-making is asking yourself if you’re willing to hurt feelings for the greater good of all in the organization and how you can support the ethical stances that you’re taking. If you answer yes to sacrificing personal feelings for the greater good, then how will you retain members of the organization or greater population? How will you protect your decisions?
